History of American Fashion

American fashion began when the English settlers arrived in America. The women and men wore their European clothes when they got off the boats but they soon realized that these were not designed for the wilderness. With a little time they also found out that the clothes they brought with them did not last long enough for the next ship to arrive from Europe.
They soon started to combine the clothing elements used by the natives with their clothes. Deer skins and moccasins became part of their attire, coats were made of bear skins and a new fashion was created.  Later on cotton was planted and processed in America but they hung on to European designs combining them with their own styles.
In the 1960’s with the arrival of television people started dressing in the same way their stars dressed. In one way or another fashion in America was directly related to what movie stars and singers wore. In the sixties men wore suits and women wore their Sunday dresses, people on the streets adopted the same dress code for work and fun.
Social movements began and the fashion world split, some continued on their clean ways and others adopted free style clothes and long hairs. One side was made up of the conservatives and the others were called hippies. Hippies professed peace and love and wild parties and revolution and they dressed in loose clothes covered with flowers and beads. Two completely and opposite styles developed and moved on evolving though time.
At the same time a third style kept evolving and never disappeared, it was the style of purse hangers and dressing ways of people in the plain states and southern USA, blue jeans and checkered shirts were men’s wear, long fluffy dresses were women’s clothes. This style and fashion remains untouched to date.
Mena while in the cities, disco came along bringing with it a new look, a new style, a new fashion trend. Bell bottom pants and miniskirts hit the streets years after they had done the same in London and Paris. Flashy colored shirts and dresses were seen twirling in discotheques and bars. Disco gave way to punk music and hard rock and fashion changed along with what singers and actors in Hollywood were wearing, ushering the era of women who try to lose weight fast.
The arrival of immigrants from all over Latin America in the 1970’s created another mixture of styles, colors and looks to where we are now. Probably American fashion is the most versatile and integrated fashion the world. Nothing is pure; you can find all kinds of ethnic features in every style and design you see. It depends on what segment of the population it is dedicated too. Asian culture mixes with Latin American which combines with African American and we come out with a beautiful rainbow of fashion.
Many Latin American designers who were not appreciated in their countries have become famous in the USA; in fact many of them are also famous in Europe too. So it is difficult to identify a true origin for American fashion, it is like its people, a big colorful pot of gold.
